Does Make-Up Cause Acne?

Most makeup products are composed of soil minerals like mica, titanium dioxide, iron oxides, zinc oxide, etc.

No matter how you look at it, makeup does cover the pores. If you leave it on for a long time, then oils trying to escape will be trapped on the skin's surface just below the make-up. If not properly washed off and rinsed, these blocked oils will soon turn to comedones or blackheads, and later on, pimples.

Non-comedogenic makeup is designed to be very light on the skin. It is water -based and therefore easy to remove. They do not leave residues on the skin that might block the pores. That is why if you have problem skin, it is recommended that you use only non-comedogenic makeup.

The better the condition of your skin, the better makeup will look on it - but the less you need it! If you have a tendency to get acne or blemishes after applying makeup, it's possible that the product you're using is making it worse. Or it could be that the tools or applicators you're using are not clean, thus spreading bacteria around.

Tips for applying makeup without getting pimples

1) Make sure your hands are clean. For example, if you've just pet your dog or taken out the garbage, you don't want to dip the same hand into your foundation or cream concealer.

2) Be sure to clean your makeup brushes regularly. You can wash them with regular shampoo, but be sure to rinse well, as soap residue can irritate the skin. The same goes for velour powder puffs and foundation sponges; these must be washed or replaced regularly.

3) Keep your makeup containers tightly closed (so that dust doesn't get in) and store them in a cool, dry environment, as heat and humidity can promote the growth of bacteria.

4) Cleanse your skin with an acne-fighting product like Nixoderm and use an oil-free moisturizer and non-comedogenic makeup.
